Paul Twitchell was the modern-day founder of Eckankar (circa 1965) which was an individual path for spiritual liberation within one’s lifetime. After his translation (death), Darwin Gross (DapRen) was introduced as his successor on October 22, 1971. He was in charge of continuing to present and teach Paul's material and expand upon it. However, in the fall of 1983, a coup was instigated by the board of directors, led by the man who was in training to succeed Darwin. Eckankar was taken over and he was ousted. Paul Twitchell's original works were edited and vibrationally diluted for the purposes of converting Eckankar into a religion. However, this event was nothing new. When reviewing the course of spiritual history on the direct path to Sugmad, the necessity of periodically changing the outer name becomes clear. Whether by theft or by the imposition of a state religion causing this way of life to go underground, the Living Master always remains flexible and adaptive for his survival and therefore the perpetuation of this most privileged way of life.
